We note the encouraging trend of a gradual return to pre-war activity. We also show the dynamics of the Ukrainian IP market development through the prism of figures and infographics.
In the face of a grueling full-scale war with the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian economy is showing impressive resilience. This allows the intellectual property sector to recover and develop.
General trends
In the first half of 2023, there was a significant increase in IP activity, which indicates a tendency to gradually return performance indicators in this area to pre-war levels. This is demonstrated by the data of the report published by the IP office.
In particular, over 15 thousand IPR applications were filed in the first six months of this year. Compared to the first half of 2022, the total number of applications increased by 51.2%:
- invention applications – +16,2%;
- utility models applications – +70,5%;
- industrial designs applications – +29,7%;
- trade marks applications (national procedure) – +55,5%.

Inventions and utility models dynamics
The trends of returning to pre-war indicators are especially clear in the statistics of inventions, where there was a 63% increase in the activity of national applicants. The total number of applications has almost caught up with the figures for the first half of 2021 - 1421 versus 1592.

The number of applications for utility models is also growing, which indicates a revival of applicants' inventive activity. Compared to the previous year, the total number of applications increased by 70.5%, with the largest increase in applications from national applicants (70.6%)

Copyright - the best results for 5 years
During the first half of 2023, 4083 applications for copyright registration were filed. This is one of the best indicators for the last 5 years. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of applications increased by 70.8%, and the number of contracts relating to the author's right to a work increased by almost 106.4%.

Business activity and trademarks
Trademarks play a key role in the development and popularization of a company, and allow consumers to distinguish their goods and services in the market.
The IP Office provides businesses and other users with information about trademarks that have been granted legal protection in Ukraine. The electronic filing of trademark applications allows brand owners to submit applications online. In total, more than 10 thousand trademark applications were filed through the electronic system in the first half of 2023.

Registration of trademarks provides an opportunity to increase business awareness and promote the competitiveness of goods and services not only in Ukraine but also in the markets of other countries.
In the first half of 2023, the share of trademark applications filed by national applicants under the national procedure increased by 66.6% (compared to the first half of last year) and amounted to 72.3% of the total number of applications filed.
